As inflation started to bite, customers flocked to comfort food and direct pre-orders to save some extra cash in fees. Customers are actively looking for cheaper ways to order and are significantly more comfortable ordering larger ticket items direct than from third party apps.

THE SUMMER'S MOST POPULAR FOOD

THIRD PARTY FEES & PRICE COMPARISON

THE TAKEAWAY: People feel more comfortable placing larger orders direct than they do on third party apps. As such, vendors who offer family style meals, packages & combos for pre-order on their store while leaving the small, impulsive orders to their third party apps will see the largest boost in their sales.

THE TAKEAWAY Bakeries and doughnut shops who post between the hours of 1am and 6am may find a unique market, void of competition.

The Takeaway: As inflation bites, people are more likely to purchase familiar comfort food than fancy adventurous meals. Vendors who offer well priced, easy bites as either mains or addons will see an increase in sales on these products.

The big three (Bakeries, Pizza & Doughnuts) remained in the same position for a third year running. Fried chicken jumped up 7 points from 12th to 5th and Mexican food gained 5 spots. Thai couldn't hang on to the top ten, dropping out to be replaced by Southern BBQ.

Vendors selling direct through their sites saved an average of $2153.00 in third party fees passing an average of $9.15 per order to their customers compared to third party apps.

As further proof that Canadians live for the fall, the last second Friday of September was the most popular day of the summer for a second year in a row. It's also the day most bakeries launch their pumpkin everything menu. Interestingly the Tuesday of the August long weekend was the slowest day of the year for second year in a row.

As expected, Friday at 5pm was the most popular time to place an order with a steady rise at 11am for Lunch orders from last year. The biggest surprise was late night Baked Goods orders which were the most likely item to be ordered between 1am and 6am.

A guy named Seamus woke up and ordered $80.01 worth of pizza at 2.59am. Well done sir, well done.

The average order was up 3% from last year to $61.70, three times that from Uber Eats in 2022.  While this increase is in step with general inflation it falls behind the 8% increase in food supply costs. The largest order of the summer was $800.04 from an Italian restaurant in Ontario.

The Future is Tasty.
